What is the Root Forest

Roots tourism is dedicated to all those who, as descendants of people who have emigrated, travel with the desire to return to visit the cities, towns and places of origin where their ancestors lived.
This type of travel offers the opportunity for authentic experiences by exploring one’s origins, discovering cultural traditions and delving into family history.
The Bosco delle Radici, located in Frisanchi in the municipality of Altopiano della Vigolana, is a symbolic space that allows one to strengthen emotional connections with one’s roots and honor the cultural heritage of those who, despite living far away, retain strong ties to their cultural identity.
Visiting this place is not just a journey, but a true return to one’s origins that enhances the historical memory of emigrant communities.

Who can participate

Private citizens descended from Trentino emigrants and, in the case of Brazilians, also from neighboring regions may participate. To take part in this project, it is necessary to provide a document proving descent or recognition of Italian citizenship, accompanied by the ancestor’s family history. This approach enhances ancestral research and strengthens emotional connections with one’s roots, allowing one to rediscover the cultural heritage andcultural identity of the community of origin. Participating in this initiative provides a unique experience of returning to one’s roots, thus promoting a tourism of roots that embraces historical memory and fosters cultural exchange between descendants and local communities.

Which ones to plant

The plants available for the Bosco delle Radici initiative are selected by the Municipality of Altopiano della Vigolana, which reserves or purchases them and carefully grows them.
This project represents an important opportunity for all those who wish to contribute to the cultural heritage of their community.
Below is a list of the essences from which you can choose for dedication:

  • Fir – Spruce – Larch – Beech – Mountain maple – Greater ash – Chestnut – Oak – Birch.

Choosing one of these plants is not only a symbolic act, but a way to honor one’s family history and celebrate a return to one’s roots, creating a lasting link with historical memory and local communities.
Each tree planted represents an important piece in the mosaic of Trentino’s culture and history, allowing people to rediscover their roots and promote authentic experiences for future generations.
